[New way of thinking about, engaging with, the Body]

Paying Attention to What the World Speaks Back to You

Organisms with varying degrees of 'cohesion' [not quite the word I'd meant]

Organisms and other people with degrees of interest and relationship.

[Need a Phasescope?]

RELATION and PRESENCE: the orthobionomy of Ortho-Bionomy®

What sorts of things are these two? More like verbs than nouns.

Relation has a back-and-forthness embedded in its being, a reflective/reflexive quality. It never rests.

It's like half your being resides over there.

How much of who I am is due to who you think I am?

Can't grab hold of it.

There's always a loophole.

It's evolution's fuel.

[see more in the chapter on Reflexes]

[Can do a reductionist trip into the hippocampus, place cells. I map the things I 'like' in close proximity to a 'central' location I call I and me. They get placed in a 'space' inside the head (so it seems).]

Presence is even trickier as we so often say it like we all know what it means. Put your hand so then simply be present, intoned Arthur Pauls. What are the steps to take to put yourself into a state of being present? What are the criteria we use to judge the degree of presence a person is being? Could there be an Olympic event, Competitive Presencing? Different styles of being present? Presence endurance?

Class assignment: watch two films: "Being There" and "The Artist is Present". Be prepared to discuss. Pay attention to the role played by projection.

Can Isay I am present if I leave the nasty bits behind? Which 'parts' of me do I choose to not bring along to my being present?

An emptying of intention. Presence is absence: an absence of intention? But it is intentional. What about aboutness?

Presence as 'pure' aboutness? Presence is the cocoon of metamorphosis? The platonic essence of mucus? Mucus is a way to 'solidly' manifest aboutness. It simultaneously holds and lets go.

Presence is the absence of a location named I, me; without my histories or prohensions (i.e. mental projections and conjurings about the 'future'). It seems to be a state of being there by not being there. And shit happens as if outside of time, outside of language, mute witnesses.

I this a Phase or is it the ground of Phasing? Does the set of all sets contain itself?

Measurement is the definitive tool (technic) of science. Measurement is always about relationship, relating this thing to that thing, creating criteria for comparison.

Agency

I want to think about agency. I don't know why this belongs here (or if it does). Maybe just tangential. I can always move it elsewhere. See where it goes, probably headlong into Brute Fact; seems the drain everything eventually runs down. Maybe thus the existential denial of meaning.

Agency. Start with a dictionary: "an individual's capacity to determine and make meaning from their environment through a purposive consciousness and reflective and creative action."

[I've figured out a why for going off into the question of agency. It gets into the whole self-other conundrum. Also relates to technics. With the line between 'human' and immediate evolutionary precursor (parents of the first human, metaphorically) drawn at "tools' the question cannot be evaded. Technics makes the human? Apparently so, at least equally valid as the contrary. Our ethics and aesthetics are guided by our technics. What does this say for our "Laws of Life"? Biotechnomos. As crucial as this conversation is for our times it is a background for this time.]

I need to table 'agency' for now except to say some serious reevaluating of the concept is in process. Things seem to be quite the other way 'round from how we thought they were. This is what Phasing can do for you: help you find other ways of looking the other way 'round.

The Beginning (for me)

The first few fime I heard Pauls's explanation of the Phases it was all about positionina.

IPhase One is all the unconscious positioning you do, resulting in self-corrections.

Phase Two some external person is guiding you, instruction you, commanding you to assume some posture.

Phase Three another person physically putting you into a position to bring about a (self)correction.

Phase Four is an improvement, it takes less time.

Phase Five turns things around. Agenccy shifts from one side to the other. The practitioner lets go of the need to be the expert, instead of the leader, becomes the follower.

[paying close attention you can see that this beginnng in Phase Four, can trace it to Phase Two]

Phase Six is another big shift. I believe Pauls left 'position' by the wayside and simply said that structural faults could be corrected [we have mostly abandoned this way of speaking] be somehow engaging with the persons aura. But keeping going with positioning, our attention can be drawn to seeing the person in relation to the surround. It is from this I developed methods of geopraxis.

Phase Seven, I and the world are one.

You can see a complete cycle here in seven turns.

Each time Pauls came around again to teach in the Bay Area (birthplace of Ortho-Bionomy®) the story of the Phases would be different. The next phase of the Phase story the focus shifted to relation. Starting with relation of self to self and expanding out, the relation to the cosmos.

Ahe above looks like it needs to be rewritten, maybe later. I want to get past history and move on. My purpose here is not to look at the individual Phases but

Changing the Conversation

I was born. I am always a vessel for something other than myself. The self is only a

The Story Teller

Now, more than ever . . . our place in the universe and the place of the universe in us, is proving to be one of active relationship. That is more than a scientist's credo. The separateness of our lives is a sham. Physics, mathematics, music, painting, my love for you, my work, the star-dust of my body, the spirit that impels it, my politics,  clocks diurnal, time perpetual, the roll, rough, tender, swamping, liberating, breathing, moving, thinking nature, human nature and the cosmos are patterned together.
